You're As Young As Your Dreams

Delivered by Pastor Kayode Fanilola (Throne Of Grace Ministries), June 8, 2007.

TEXT: And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughter shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. (Joel 2:28)

There are three different types of people. The first are the people that look their age. The second are the people who look younger than their age. The third are the people who look older than their age. What are the things that can be responsible for either looking younger or looking older than one's actual age? I am not competent to provide answer to this question. I will rely on the findings of the experts on geriatrics. It was generally agreed among them that people don't age gradually, but sporadically. People are in one condition today and tomorrow they are in another condition. The sudden declines, the experts say are not as a result of internal factors but that of external factors. The sudden declines, they say are as a result of events or lack of events in our lives. They say aging is associated with a change of spirit, a change of outlook and a change of attitude. If you give up and lie low, you get old, but if you get up, and get going, you keep young. If you want to keep young, you must be engaged with challenging interests, exciting opportunities and wonderful dreams.

The day you stop dreaming is the day you stop growing. The day you stop growing is the day you start to die. You cannot be too old to dream. Never let a day pass without dreaming or without working on how to actualize a dream. Who says that you are too old to go to college? Who says that you are too old to learn how to use a new technology? Retired? Yes I know, but fresh dreams can get you firing instead of tiring.

An anonymous writer quoted by Donald W. Morgan in his When Your World Is Coming Apart wrote, "Youth is not a time of life. It is a state of mind. Nobody grows old by living a number of years; people grow old by deserting their ideals. Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, doubt, self-distrust, fear, and despair- these are the long years that bow the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust."

Dream is the content of hope. The day you stop dreaming is the day your hope becomes empty and it is also the day your life becomes empty, and death begins with empty life. Therefore, dreams are anti aging capsules that bring youthfulness to the spirit. You are as young as your faith, and as old as your doubt. You are as young as your self confidence, and as old as your fear. You are as young as your hope, and as old as your despair. Finally, you are as young as your dreams.
